A photo of mine recently won the Distinguished Sports Photography category for the New York News Publishers Association in the 50,000-175,000 circulation class. Awards are presented for 15 traditional print categories (including sports, feature and news photography) in addition to several online/multimedia categories in five circulation classes. P-S reporter John O’Brien was also honored for Distinguished Investigative Reporting as well as Dave Tobin for his blog “Following Orion.”

I cover a lot of Syracuse Crunch games for The Post-Standard. The minor league hockey team (AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets) has some pretty devoted fans, and yesterday, had a few thousand more (21,000 plus!) as the team played Binghamton in the AHL’s first-ever outdoor game at the New York State Fairgrounds. It turned out to be a really great venue.

Just over 29,000 people filled the Dome yesterday to see Syracuse University play Marquette as the Orange squeezed out a 76-71 win!

I spent some time today looking through the images I captured for The Post-Standard over the past year and thought I’d share with you some of those I liked best. Some are significant because of the news value or timeliness, others more impactful because of the composition or setting. I think it’s a good process for any photographer to go through, and it makes me excited about a new year and fresh opportunities behind the lens!

The Post-Standard published several “Best of Images” this week including best news, life and sports images from the past year. The P-S also highlighted the top ten news stories of the decade – those that editors thought touched the lives of Central New Yorkers the most – for which related images were featured. Take a look!
